This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the Christopher Heitzman Benefit 5K Run. The event takes place Saturday morning at Lassiter High School, with proceeds to help pay for medical expenses for the injured graduate. Heitzman, who graduated from Lassiter last spring, was seriously injured in a car accident last July on Trickum Road that killed his classmate, Ryan Aschenbach, and injured another recent Lassiter graduate Tyler Seaman. Heitzman sustained a head injury and several broken bones, and will need more surgeries. The fundraiser has collected just under $40,000 from pre-registration, and is hoping to raise more money to help cover Heitzman's medical expenses. Pre-registration for the run is $20 …

Officials with the Paulding Education Foundation are hoping to raise $14,000 through a golf tournament on Monday to fund scholarships and grants. This is the second time the foundation has hosted the Autumn Golf Classic, and Executive Director Amy Mollohan said she plans it to become an annual event. The first golf tournament was held two years ago. "It’s a great way for the businesses who partner with the foundation to not only promtote their business but also help the public schools," Mollohan said. "It makes for a great day." The golf tournament will be held at Creekside Golf Club in Hiram. The Day for Renae Hudgens Block Party will be held Saturday and will begin at Rodney's Bar-B-Que.
Several local businesses are joining together this weekend to help the wife of a Paulding County Sheriff’s deputy. Renae Hudgens, the wife of Sgt. Mitch Hudgens, is suffering from a “rare disease,” and the couple has incurred $20,000 in medical bills, said Tammy Dobson, whose husband, Rodney, owns Rodney’s Bar-B-Que and Catering. “(Mitch) is a good customer of ours,” Dobson said. “He was talking to us about all the medical bills and said that insurance didn’t cover it. I felt compelled to do something.” So, Dobson decided to put together a fundraiser for the Hudgens’.
