90,000-plus Lights, $100,000 for Local Schools?

More than three weeks of preparation and effort from family and friends went into the Christmas display at the Felix family’s home. The Dallas residence is one of 24 finalists in Patch’s Deck the House contest.

Joey Felix may trace the origins of his family’s annual Christmas light display to his childhood, but luckily for him, he doesn’t have to work on it alone. “I have been decorating for Christmas since I was a child. I think I developed a love for the holidays from my grandmother and mother,” Felix said. “As a little boy I would help them decorate and every Christmas Eve we would outline my grandmother’s entire driveway and sidewalk with luminaries. “When my wife and I met, I started decorating her house—[this was] about 11 years ago. We did not make the jump to computer animation until 2006, [and] we get bigger every year.” Fast-forward to Christmas 2011 and the decorations Felix installed have moved far beyond the luminaries along the …

We’re now awaiting the decision of a national Patch judge, who will select 24 finalists out of the local winners from Patch sites across the country. Video: Project Gives Bikes, Trikes to Needy Kids

The Paulding County Shrine Club and Paulding County Sheriff’s Office teamed up Saturday to give dozens of needy kids bicycles and tricycles in the “Spokes for Little Folks” project.

Most children who participated Saturday in the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office's 15th-annual Cops for Kids Christmas campaign weren’t finished for the day when they walked out of the Dallas Walmart. That’s because the sheriff’s office, along with the Paulding County Shrine Club, had teamed up to put on “Spokes for Little Folks,” a project aimed at putting donated bicycles and tricycles in the hands of Paulding’s needy children. More than 200 bikes and trikes were available to those who took part in Cops for Kids, in which needy children were allowed to spend $150 as they shopped in the morning with a member of area law enforcement agencies. Video: Cops Give 250 Kids a Christmas

Saturday’s annual Cops for Kids Christmas shopping event had children picking out toys and more with the help of local law enforcement.

An estimated 250 underprivileged children took home Christmas gifts from the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office's 15th-annual Cops for Kids Christmas shopping event Saturday. Held at the Dallas Walmart, participants—typically children ages 9 to 12, many of whom are on free or reduced breakfast and lunch at their schools—were allowed to spend $150 as they shopped in the morning with a member of area law enforcement agencies. Though many children were able to take home some of their desired Christmas gifts, event organizers say they had to turn down families who applied for assistance after the nonprofit had already reached this year’s capacity weeks before Saturday’s shopping day. The campaign also was affected by lower donations this year. …
