Academy Sports Gearing Up for Friday Opening

The new sports store in Hiram won’t have a grand opening event on its first day of operations, but the first customers at the door are set to walk away with a freebie.

Passers-by have seen the sign for weeks, but on Friday, they’ll finally get to walk through the doors of Paulding’s newest sporting goods store, Academy Sports + Outdoors. This will be the 142nd store for the Texas-based company and its seventh in Georgia, according to a news release from the company. The Hiram store will be Academy’s fourth metro Atlanta-area location, with all four beginning operations within the previous year. McDonough was the first in the metro area to welcome Academy, followed by Snellville and Cumming. The new store’s doors will open to the public at 8 a.m., with the first 70 customers in line receiving a free 20-inch youth Huffy bike. The opening comes more than a year after another store closed down at the same …

Fill in the Blank

What Should Go Here?

With Food Lion departing, we ask you what you’d like to see take the place of the grocer.

Our newest column, Fill in the Blank, is where we show you a vacant building or soon-to-be-vacant building in Dallas or Hiram, and you tell us what type of establishment you'd like to see move in. Simple, right? So without further ado: With the Dallas Food Lion closing, what would you like to see replace the departing grocery store? Does the area need a grocery store, or would you prefer that something else replace it? We’ll also use the Fill in the Blank column to report on previously reported empty storefronts should there be news on potential businesses moving in. Let us know if you get wind of any talk of new business coming to town and we’ll look into it—that’s how we heard last year about Academy Sports’ plans to build in Hiram …

The former Food Lion is too much space for an Apple store or restaurant. It is sufficient space for a JoAnn store (which would do well if the site were developed). An Aldi store would do well on the corner and offer groceries in limited variety. An Ace Hardware store would be a great addition to the site. The site could be a "go to" place for the area.   more ›

Here are five business stories that impacted the county in 2011 and could continue to do so in 2012 and beyond. Cincinnati, Ohio-based Kroger Company in January announced plans to close its Hiram location on Jimmy Lee Smith Parkway. Paulding residents saw the store close its doors just over a month later.
