Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he is resigning, effective Feb. 28. Archdiocese of Atlanta Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory held a press conference this afternoon in Smyrna to address questions and concerns. “This announcement has sparked widespread surprise but also a great outpouring of prayers and affection for the Holy Father. His stated reasons for resigning are his frailty as a result of age and his desire to make sure that the Church has a Pontiff with the energy and stamina to carry on the heavy burdens that come with the Office of Pope. Sandra Deal read to students at W.C. Abney Elementary Thursday afternoon, her visit the result of several students’ letters to the governor’s office sent last year.
A handful of first-graders’ letters brought Georgia’s First Lady to Paulding County. Sandra Deal, the wife of Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, came to W.C. Abney Elementary Thursday afternoon to read to students. Her visit to the school included a stop in Karen Edfeldt’s first-grade classroom. It was the efforts of Edfeldt’s class last year that led to Deal’s visit to Dallas. “One of my students from last year, Olivia Kirkman, was the poster child for food allergy awareness for the state of Georgia, so she went for a day at the capitol. My students, we were working on persuasive writing, so they wrote letters to the governor inviting him to come and visit our school, and Olivia took them and delivered them. Wednesday brought weather that led to road closures across Paulding County, but luckily, no reports of injuries or fatalities. The day’s weather also was enough of a threat to lead officials with Paulding County Schools and nearby Cobb County Schools to cancel extracurricular activities.
