Maintenance will take place along SR 113.
Through Friday, Georgia DOT maintenance crews will work on sealing the cracks on the surface of the roadway of on SR 113 in Paulding County from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. "Sealing pavement cracks is a Georgia DOT maintenance practice that helps to prevent water from entering the base and sub-base of the roadway and extend the pavement life by at least three years, while improving rideability on that roadway," Georgia DOT spokesman Mohamed Arafa said.

On occasion, we here at Dallas-Hiram Patch venture onto YouTube to find videos of local relevance. A recent video that caught our eye was one uploaded by YouTube user pingdis on Dec. 2. The clip shows what appears to be a small gold nugget in a Paulding County creek. As of early Thursday, the video (which is attached to this article) had 46 views. Do you have a recent YouTube video that’s worth featuring on Dallas-Hiram Patch? Send an email to jon.gargis@patch.com and tell us more. We’re not sure if the tiny, shiny rock is enough to bring prospectors in to start the “Great Paulding County Gold Rush of 2012,” and the video does not specify exactly where it was found. But if you’re up for taking up panning in Paulding’s bodies of water, more…

Last month, the Georgia Water Coalition released its “Dirty Dozen” report highlighting the “most egregious offenses” to Georgia’s water resources. Gov. Nathan Deal’s administration, which was the target of much of the report, responded by calling the 185-member coalition of environmental, hunting and fishing, business, landowner and faith-based groups a “liberal interest group.” Label the messengers “liberal,” so the thinking goes in some quarters of this state, and the message will be ignored. But a careful look at the Water Coalition’s “Dirty Dozen” shows that the message is about dirty politics as much as dirty water. Within the report, the so-called “liberal interest group” highlights $213 million in government spending that should …

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 8.7 percent in October, down from 9 percent in September. The jobless rate was 9.7 percent in October 2011. “The unemployment rate dropped because we had an increase of 36,000 new jobs, which is the largest September to October job increase ever,” State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a news release. “That job growth pushed the number of jobs in October to the highest level in any month since December of 2008.” Statewide, there were 3,971,700 jobs in October, up 0.9 percent, from 3,935,700 in September. The growth came in retail trade, up 8,000; education and health care, up 7,000; professional and business services…

Paulding County showed positive movement on the jobs front Thursday. The Georgia Department of Labor announced early Thursday that the preliminary unemployment rate in the Northwest Georgia area declined to 8.8 percent in September, down five-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 9.3 percent in August. The rate was 10.3 percent in September 2011. According to a GDOL news release, Northwest Georgia’s rate declined primarily because the number of unemployed people decreased by 1,843. Also, the number of employed people increased by 5,326. Granite countertops are just one kind of home improvement.
Last Saturday I had the pleasure of working with dozens of locally owned businesses and a small army of volunteers at a benefit for a Paulding county citizen who is battling a grave illness. Renae Hudgens is the wife of Paulding County Sheriff’s Deputy Mitch Hudgens. The event was sponsored by many of the county’s small business owners in an effort to support one of our neighbors in need to raise money to offset Mrs. Hudgens’ mounting medical bills. After a long and yet rewarding day of live auctions, raffles, motorcycle stunts, bands, bingo and barbecue, I went to bed that evening with a renewed sense of community and a greater understanding of the value of service. We often hear about what makes a strong community. Is it the businesses, …

Cobb citizens with Paulding addresses could see their correct residency on letters and packages.
Cobb residents with Paulding addresses will soon be able to decide by a group vote on whether to switch their ZIP code to reflect the county they actually live in. Since April 2011, when one of the affected residents asked the Powder Springs City Council for support, the city has requested that the Postal Service change Hiram's 30141 in Cobb to Powder Springs' 30127. “They finally, last month, sent a letter saying they would accommodate the request on certain conditions," Community Development Director Pam Conner said at Wednesday's work session. The city must provide a hot line for people to call in and ask questions, as well as host a meeting on the matter. The meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the Coach Ford Center's …
