Gooden Sparks Chapel Hill in Win Over Paulding County

Eric Gooden doesn’t normally come off the bench for Chapel Hill, but after Saturday’s performance in the Panthers’ 63-51 win over Paulding County in the Region 5-AAAA tournament, head coach Lee Wilson might have to consider it as part of a new strategy. Gooden led the Panthers with 19 points, despite playing just three quarters for disciplinary reasons. “We teach principal over passion,” Wilson said. “He missed a shootaround, so he had to sit out the first quarter.” Gooden was the catalyst in the pivotal third quarter in which Chapel Hill turned a 25-25 tie into a 46-37 lead. Paulding County Advances in Region Tournament

A come-from-behind win moves the Patriots into the second round of the Region 5-AAAA basketball tournament.

When a basketball team jumps out on a 20-1 run in the first quarter like North Paulding did to Paulding County in the first round of the Region 5-AAAA Tournament on Thursday, most people expect a rout. That didn’t happen, and both coaches said they knew that it wouldn’t. Paulding County head coach Anthony Cayetano had very simple advice during the break between the first a second quarter. “Wake up!” During North Paulding’s meeting after the quarter, head coach Chris Wolski warned his team to prepare for a Paulding County run. Boy was he right. The Patriots outscored North Paulding 31-14 in the second quarter to cut that 19-point deficit down to a respectable two points. Osborne High School Girls Preview: Paulding County (9-7, 1-5) has already lost two games this week and would like to avoid a third at Osborne (7-7, 4-3) on Friday. Osborne has won two of its last three games and needs the win to stay in the upper half of the 5-AAAA region standings. Boys Preview: After a 6-point win and two close losses by an average of seven points, Paulding County (6-10, 1-5) was thumped by 40 points on Wednesday. Here is what to watch for at Dallas - Hiram Patch on Tuesday: Teams: North Paulding vs. South Paulding When: 6 p.m. girls; 7:30 p.m boys Where: South Paulding High School Girls Preview: North Paulding’s (1-17, 0-7) first win in over two years came on Dec. 29 against South Paulding (4-12, 0-6). The game was part of the Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament and didn’t count in regional play, but it was epic for setting up Tuesday’s matchup. Teams: Hiram vs. Lithia Springs Time: 7:30 p.m. Where: Hiram High School Preview: Hiram (6-7, 2-1) has lost three games in a row and has a tough test in front of them on Friday when they welcome Lithia Springs (7-4, 3-0). To end this losing streak, Hiram will have to slow the Lions down. Teams: North Paulding vs. East Paulding Time: 7:30 p.m. Where: East Paulding High School Preview: When North Paulding (2-11, 1-3) beat Johnson County in the Lake City Classic, they ended a 15-game losing streak that dated back to last season. Since that win, the Wolfpack have won again, and would like to continue their winning ways.
