One soldier was injured today when several Army parachutists missed their mark while attempting to land at Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport after jumping out of a helicopter during a military exercise, according to Detective Donny Pace, Paulding County Sheriff's Department. The injured soldier was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. "He was alert and talking," Kerry Tidmore said, Airport Authority Board. "He may have hurt his neck or had a minor head injury." As the nine soldiers, stationed at Dobbins Air Force Reserve Base, jumped from a CH-47 Chinook tandem rotor helicopter. There was a gust of wind that caused them to miss the drop zone, Tidmore said. The jumpers were using a round-style parachute that is basically …

The Paulding County Northwest Atlanta Airport Authority spent a fair chunk of its Nov. 21 meeting time recapping Salute America 2012, the site’s first airshow, which was held last month. Brent Sparks, who will serve as director of next year’s show, said that in terms of goals for the show—which included safety, promotion of the airport site, presentation and event logistics—the show was a success, even though from a fiscal standpoint, it did not actually manage to break even. “The show was world-class and people can’t just pull that out of their hat,” Sparks told members of the airport board. Organizers were prepared for a turnout of anywhere from 6,000 up to 12,000, but estimates were closer to approximately 4,500. Sparks said that …

Wind may have played a factor in the collapse Wednesday of an under-construction hangar that led to the injuries of two construction workers. Blake Swafford, director of the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport, said crews with Superior Foundations and Steel Erection had begun erecting the hangar’s steel Monday. The collapse injured two workers with Superior Foundations; Swafford said the two originally were taken to Paulding WellStar Hospital, with one possibly later taken to WellStar Kennestone in Marietta. “One was conscious and talking when he left the site, the other one, I don’t believe, was conscious,” Swafford said. Neither Swafford nor officials with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, who first responded to the scene, were able …

By mid-February, more hangar construction should be completed at the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport at a cost of $1.7 million. Three tenants already have been lined up, he said. In addition, there will be about 11,000 square feet of office space available in a two-story lean-to addition to the hangar. During the subsequent meeting of the Paulding County Industrial Building Authority (IBA), members voted unanimously to award Optum Construction a not-to-exceed contract for $99,499 for the hangar's site work as a separate expenditure from the $1.7 million construction …
