The house was actually built by the first person who owned it—something a local historian says is rare.
Back in the late 1880s, it was unusual for people who lived in downtown Dallas to literally build their houses themselves. But that’s exactly what James P. Cooper did. In 1884, he built the white, wooden house at 408 Hardee St. “Typically people who lived in town were doctors or lawyers or merchants,” said Jason Edwards, Paulding County’s historian, whose family now owns the house. And Cooper, a Civil War veteran, wasn’t a carpenter by trade. He owned a mill before he moved to Dallas; he ran general stores in Dallas, Atlanta and Milledgeville; he sold fruit trees commercially. “He advertised in the Dallas paper that he had fruit trees for sale,” Edwards said. “I think he had his hands in a lot of different things.” Cooper and his wife, …

It could be the best time in years.
In 2009, I wrote the following in a blog entry: “Sellers, hang in there, your day is coming … It's a cycle. Your time will come around again.” Sellers, your day is finally arriving. With the severe lack of inventory in our area over the past six to eight months, it was inevitable that prices and demand would begin their ascent and we would see an increase in the activity for previously “unsellable” property. Here’s a perfect example. Last week, we listed a property that is in overall good condition and is priced to market comparables. Within two days we’d had three showings and an offer was made. While we were negotiating that offer, the property received three more showings in the following days. To recap, within one week of listing there…

The modern-looking home on Confederate Avenue next to Georgia Power actually was built in the 1800s.
The house next to Georgia Power’s office on Confederate Avenue in Dallas may look new, but the structure was built in 1893. The home likely was built out of wood, as was typical for that time, and originally was owned by William Henry and Sarah Matthews Bone. Sarah Matthews Bone was the granddaughter of Malachi Pickett, who owned the land where Pickett’s Mill State Park now stands. Her husband ran a butcher shop on Main Street from 1897 until 1901. In 1903, the Bones moved to Atlanta, selling the house to John Terrell Finch, a Confederate veteran who had fought in the Civil War. Finch spent most of his life as a farmer in the High Shoals community, and he bought the home in downtown Dallas at the age of 70, six years before he died. “That …

Do you have the right team working for you?
We say it over and over, to all of our clients. At least twice daily, you’ll hear one of us say to a client, “Buying and selling real estate is a process, not an event.” With the current market being highly competitive, that mantra can’t be repeated enough. It’s important to remember that multiple offers are a reality in this market. Appraisals, changing lending rules and competition with other buyers can be trying and discouraging. The key is to have the right team working for you. Is your real estate professional knowledgeable about the process? How easily can he or she answer your questions? Does your real estate professional have a team of professional alliance partners that complements the level service being provided? When choosing a…

The building that now houses The Olive Tree was home to numerous businesses in the past.
The building at the corner of Beatty and Main streets in downtown Hiram has seen a lot of faces in the past 105 years. The Bank of Hiram opened there in 1907 and was the first business to open in downtown Hiram in the new building after the town burned three years earlier. It had 250 shares of stock, most of which were purchased by local residents, and the bank’s charter was granted in March 1907, a month before it officially opened. The bank grew over the next 10 years and peaked in 1918 with $250,000 in developed resources. In 1921, the bank contracted with Bankers Trust and became one of the Manly Banks. Five years later the Manly Banks failed, and the Bank of Hiram was liquidated. A liquidating agent was appointed in 1927, and within a…

The store on Highway 61 in the Burnt Hickory community was a place for local residents to gather throughout the years.
Wills Grocery has long been a place for residents of Paulding County’s Burnt Hickory community to socialize. “They used to come out here and play checkers, play cards,” said Bill Wills, who now operates the store. Though the name of the store is Wills Grocery, it has become known throughout the community as “Aunt Mae’s” for Mae Wills, Bill Wills’ mother, who ran the business for many years. According to the book The Heritage of Paulding County, Mae Wills treated everybody like family. The general store on Highway 61 near Narroway Church Road was built shortly after construction of the highway was finished in 1939 by Coney Wilbanks. The business switched hands several times over the years, being owned by Troy Wilbanks, Talmadge Cochran and …

It's a really neat old building on the inside and The Olive Tree hosted Hiram's first dinner theater production there this past Saturday night. It was a sell-out event and the old building was a perfect venue!   more ›
