Hiram Ousted from Region Tournament

Hornets fall to Alexander in second game of the Region 5-AAAA tournament.

Saturday’s Region 5-AAAA tournament game between Alexander and Hiram was the kind of game where momentum seemed to change jerseys early and often. “It was a game of runs,” said Hiram head coach Jermaine Sellers. Alexander head coach David Cottrell echoed that point and said, “We answered their runs with our own runs.” With all the runs being made in the game, it seemed that the team that had the last run would come out on top. In the first quarter, Hiram’s zone defense forced the Cougars into long jump shots and held them to 11 points. The Hornets had a 6-point lead after one quarter thanks to a half-court buzzer-beater by Foday Bangura. Hiram Bounces South Paulding From Tournament

The Hornets never trailed and won by 20 in the first round of the Region 5-AAAA Tournament.

The Hiram Hornets hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter and scored the first eight points of the game against South Paulding on Thursday in the first round of the Region 5-AAAA Tournament. The Hornets never gave up that lead, winning 72-52. “They came out shooting the ball extremely well and they killed us on the boards,” said South Paulding head coach Jamie Watkins. “They killed us on the boards and hit seven or eight threes early and they're a lot more physical than we are -- that's the ballgame.” Watkins didn’t mince words after his teams’ 20-point loss where the Spartans offense could just never get revved up. Here is what to watch for at the Dallas - Hiram Patch on Friday: Teams: Paulding County vs. Osborne When: 6 p.m. girls; 7:30 p.m boys Where: R.L. Osborne High School Girls Preview: Paulding County (9-7, 1-5) has already lost two games this week and would like to avoid a third at Osborne (7-7, 4-3) on Friday. Osborne has won two of its last three games and needs the win to stay in the upper half of the 5-AAAA region standings. Boys Preview: After a 6-point win and two close losses by an average of seven points, Paulding County (6-10, 1-5) was thumped by 40 points on Wednesday. Here is what to watch for at Dallas - Hiram Patch on Tuesday: Teams: North Paulding vs. South Paulding When: 6 p.m. girls; 7:30 p.m boys Where: South Paulding High School Girls Preview: North Paulding’s (1-17, 0-7) first win in over two years came on Dec. 29 against South Paulding (4-12, 0-6). The game was part of the Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament and didn’t count in regional play, but it was epic for setting up Tuesday’s matchup. South Paulding would like to erase the memory of being an historic footnote while keeping it from happening again. Teams: East Paulding vs. Hiram Time: Girls-6 p.m.; Boys-7:30 p.m. Where: Hiram High School Girls Preview: Hiram (11-3, 3-1) will attempt to remain in third place in Region 5-AAAA and extend a three-game winning streak when it hosts East Paulding (5-7, 1-2). Hiram has been stout defensively all season, allowing an average of 34 points per game. East Paulding has won two of three games dating back to Dec. 17. Boys Preview: Hiram (7-8, 2-2) hosts East Paulding (5-7, 1-2) in a battle of two teams trying to distinguish themselves from the middle of the pack in Region 5-AAAA. Hiram Loses Heartbreaker to Lithia Springs

Lions outlast Hornets in 71-68 loss.

The Hiram Hornets lost a heartbreaker to the visiting Lithia Springs Lions on Friday night, 71-68. Hiram drops to 6-8 on the season with the loss. Down the stretch, Hiram couldn’t find the bottom of the basket. They found themselves down by five points with 2:57 left in the fourth quarter. The Hornets tied the game 67-67 with 2:14 left, but missed several key baskets for the go ahead. “We haven't been able to make shots around the basket all year and it really magnified tonight with how the game ended," said fifth year head coach Jermaine Sellers. "We just gotta do the little things right like finishing around the basket and do a better job on the ball with our defense. We sometimes get off to a slow start which hurts us sometimes, but we …

Hornets defeat Lithia Springs by 21

Hiram was too much for the Lions to handle.

The Hiram Hornets defeated the visiting Lithia Springs Lions on Friday night, 47-26. With the win, the Hornets move to 10-2 on the season. Hiram went on a 6-0 run starting at the 6:04 mark in the first quarter and by the end of the quarter, the team was up 14-7. A minute into the second quarter, the Hornets went on a 4-0 run, making the score 18-7. Hiram started to break away from the Lions (3-11) when they went on a 15-0 run with 3:21 left in the half. The Hornets held Lithia Springs to just four points during the quarter. By halftime, the score was 33-11. “I was really pleased with the way we played in the first half,” said third-year head coach Michelle Caldwell. “We’ve been having trouble with consistency and playing an entire game.” …
