Former House Candidate, Mayor Gets 5 Years Probation

Mickey Thompson, who ran earlier this year for the House District 66 seat, was sentenced this morning and will pay $28,483 in restitution as well as a $3,000 fine.

Douglasville's former mayor Mickey Thompson was sentenced Monday morning in Judge David T. Emerson's courtroom. According to Andrew Agan, director of Community Relations for the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, he received the following sentence: Thompson was indicted Sept. 24 on 91 counts of theft. In question are meetings that were held via teleconference and by electronic means because the ordinance states that the elected official must attend in person. A Sentinel Newspaper article points out that, "Douglasville is all alone in using a per-meetings system to calculate compensation." The three GOP State House District 66 candidates met June 28 at a candidate forum to answer questions posed by the GOP. Mike Miller is a current Douglas County School Board member; Bob Snelling formerly served in the Georgia House of Representatives, 1995 to 2003; and Mickey Thompson served as Douglasville mayor for 12 years and as a city councilman for four. The Republican primary is July 31. The winner of the primary will face Democrat Kimberly Alexander in the Nov. 6 election. Douglas County District Attorney David McDade has requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation investigate some payments made to the former Douglasville mayor and City Council members. Former Mayor Mickey Thompson is running for the Georgia House District 66 seat, which now includes parts of Paulding County. A Douglas County Sentinel story on June 10 reported that "some Douglasville elected officials may have received thousands of dollars for meetings that do not appear to qualify for payment under city statute." According to the Sentinel, GBI officials were in Douglasville last week and  reviewed meeting attendance sheets and records of payments. They also requested copies of documents.
